Ms Tryphena Ow has become the first Singapore-based student to complete Honours at Murdoch University’s South Street campus under the new scholarship scheme.
Ms Ow was supervised by Professor Domenic Gasbarro from the School of Business and Governance and completed her Honours in Finance as a full time student in a little under a year. She reports it was a challenging but ultimately very rewarding year.
‘It was hard work, particularly at first, but Professor Gasbarro helped me a lot and in the end it has worked out very well’. Tryphena may go on to higher studies but in the meantime she is glad of the competitive advantage an Honours qualification gives her in the crowded Singapore job market.
The Honours Scholarship Scheme was started by then Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Taggart in late 2015. Professor Taggart was keen to ensure that our Singapore-based students had the opportunity to complete an Honours year – an opportunity that is taken for granted by local students studying at our South Street campus.
The Scheme is competitive in nature and students must study at Murdoch University’s South Street (Perth) campus. Winners are awarded AUS$5000 towards their tuition fees and AUS$4000 towards accommodation. They have the opportunity to research in world class facilities, working closely with highly experienced supervisors in the beautiful and safe city of Perth. It is possible to commence Honours in either Semester One (February) or Semester Two (July).
Now that she has handed in her thesis Tryphena is planning a little holiday time before returning to Singapore in early December. She hopes to return for the Graduation ceremony in February along with her two very proud parents.
