Tuesday 11th April 2017. Australian company Gemstar Technology, with HQs in Singapore, launched the first Young Entrepreneurs Program in Singapore yesterday at its Innovation Centre of Excellence.
From 10th April – 5th May, a cohort of talented young entrepreneurs from Murdoch University will participate in a series of Gemstar-led master classes and workshops designed to foster innovative thinking and smart, sustainable business planning.
The students initially took part in a competition, ‘Innovate Singapore’, run by Murdoch University and Kaplan. The competition was designed to encourage students to develop an innovative business targeting the international growth of Singapore’s SME sector.
The winner of the competition, Abigail Pilapil, was flown to Sydney to spend time with CBA, another competition partner, and Gemstar, to further refine her idea. Abigail, along with the runner-up teams led by Darren Li and Mohan Pritham, will now participate in Gemstar’s Young Entrepreneurs Program.
Gemstar’s Young Entrepreneurs Program aims to nurture aspiring young entrepreneurs and promote local talent across the region while also adopting a deep dive commercialisation approach, ensuring that aspiring entrepreneurs are given the best opportunity possible to build successful and sustainable businesses with global potential.
Manning & Co. and Gemstar Director, Gemma Manning, has relocated to Singapore for the duration of the Young Entrepreneurs Program. As a strategic marketing expert and serial entrepreneur, Gemma will mentor participants throughout the program.
“I’m very excited to work closely with Singapore’s budding young talent from Murdoch University, mentoring participants from design through to the pitch and implementation of their ideas,” she said.
“What makes Gemstar’s Young Entrepreneurs Program unique is our marketing-led, business-savvy approach to commercialisation and doing business, which teaches aspiring entrepreneurs to think about the bigger picture. We will guide participants through the realities of doing business in Asia and other international markets such as Australia and the US, from brand building to financial planning to creating the perfect pitch to win business.”
The program prepares participants for taking their ideas and innovations to market. In week 5, participants will pitch their ideas in front of a panel of experts at the Gemstar Innovation Centre of Excellence, including stakeholders, investors and partners.
Drawing upon sister company Manning & Co.’s industry know-how and established reputation in Sydney, Gemstar will continue to unearth talent in Australia and Singapore alike, introducing the latest technologies to Singapore’s thriving innovation ecosystem. ~ENDS
